Rue is widely regarded as a powerful magical herb with a long history of protective uses. Many people carry a small cloth bag containing rue or place it above their front door to ward off the Evil Eye. In Italy, the herb is so valued for its protective qualities that a silver charm called the Cimaruta, or Sprig of Rue, is worn as an amulet. Some make rue tea to sprinkle around their home for protection or use it in a bath to break curses and spells. Rue, when mixed with comfrey root, is believed to enhance health, and burning it with verbena, mistletoe, and benzoin is thought to remove jinxes. Rue is also said to have applications in love magic; when burned with lavender and sandalwood, it is believed to act as a lover's incense. Placing it in a man’s left shoe is thought to bind him romantically.
